Flame Spray

Flame spray is a term used in the coating industry to describe many of the Thermal Spray Processes. Because of its connotation, it is often used loosely as a general synonym for all of the metal spray processes. These include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Metallizing
  • Thermal Spray
  • Plasma Spray
  • Twin Wire Arc Spray
  • Metal Spray
  • HVOF Spray
  • Low Pressure Plasma Spray
As stated by the word "flame" some type of heat source associated to the process is needed to melt the spray materials. Whether it is produced by an electric arc, oxygen-fuel, or plasma arc, there needs to be a source of heat sufficient to excite and make somewhat molten particles to apply with pressurized gases. Flame spray is a welding technology and it is sometimes refered to as "spray weld".
